What about a song like "Man of Constant Sorrow" (or any of the other names that tune has)? Would that be considered a standard or a cover? The Soggy Bottom Boys (Union Station) did it about 10 years ago for O Brother Where Art Thou in two variations (one longer and with a bridge) with several instrumental arrangements throughout the film. I'd almost say that a song like that could be considered a standard, due to its age and longevity. Didn't it start out as a hymn? Come to think of it, didn't Peter Paul and Mary sing it? I seem to recall my dad playing that on a PP&M cassette tape in the 80s...

Great series, by the way!

Of course you're barking mad--but it has nothing whatsoever to do with this. (Yes, trust your brother to be a smart-ass.)

The first time people hear that message, people love it.

Though, lately... some of the reactions have been changing to "Please! Please, God! Change your message!"

Still the reactions to it are so amusing that I leave it.

I'm 41, I still play air guitar and air drums, and I, too, am a dork.

Ha! What a good story. I've often been caught singing in the car, usually to something really embarrassing.

I knew I wanted a tattoo from the time I was 19, but I was in no hurry to actually get it. I figured the spirit would hit me when it was time. When Dan & I were planning a trip for our 1-year anniversary, I knew: now is the time (I was turning 34). And the tattoo of an autumn leaf was the tattoo I wanted. It was just like a switch went on. I wouldn't really bother until your switch gets flipped. :-)

However, I was laboring under the enormous fallacy that all tattoo artists are about the same. I went in one place, and they were annoying, so I left & went somewhere else. I really liked them & the experience. It took a long time for me to realize that the tattooing was unnecessarily heavily outlined, so it looks like someone drew the outline with a marker. So I would very seriously suggest that you find tattoos that you like, and ask people for a referral, or at least ask around for opinions.

Rebecca,

Thank you so kindly! Glad to potentially expand your horizons a bit too, as if that really needs doing. (grin)

You should hop on over to allmusic and check a couple samples from the album. I won't say it's life changing, at least not in a good way, but it really does bear listening to once. There's no way to truly appreciate how bizarre the thing was until you hear it yourself.

It's funny to look back at the Beatles catalog too. They were an incredibly prolific band, and continued on as solo artists after they broke up in 1970. I'm continually amazed at how many truly great songs they had.

That's the thing. I can never decide if it means enough to me to get it done. Once I get to the point that I want to do it, I'll go with a temp for a couple weeks, just to see how it goes. I'm also tempted by a steam engine (locomotive) wheel in the crook of one elbow or even a steam engine driver rod along an arm.

I haven't talked to a tattoo artist yet because I feel like such a dork even thinking about it. It's my hangup, I know that, but it still holds me back.

I can see it being a bigger thing to the artists in the bands, getting their logos inked. It's a huge part of their life, their passion. If I was in a band, I'd do that too, no question.

Absolutely no cartoon characters though.
